In the late 1700s, a young and very brave Indigenous woman, named Toypurina, challenged the Spanish mission that was disrupting and diminishing the Kizh lands and culture in California. Then, for rebelling, she was harshly punished. Now, Toypurina is recognized as an important figure in the history of the Indigenous people of America.
